The high speed stations in the great metropolises of Turin, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples have been restructured, upgraded or integrated with completely new stations designed by world famous designers, winners of international design awards, including: Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki, Ove Arup & Partners, M+T & Partners, Santiago Calatrava.

Besides being transport terminals and important architectural monuments, the new stations also have commercial, cultural and territorial improvement functions.

Every single detail was scrupulously studied and the choice of the materials was of fundamental importance, as is the case of the numerous doors that act as rail noise barriers with steel wings buffered in crush-proof and bullet-proof stratified glass. The doorframes are Palladio steel profiles, hot galvanised and mounted on steel supports, independent modular panels that can be installed in any situation.

All the single parts on each single steel door are also in steel: stainless steel hinges, anti-panic handles and adjustable closing springs.

Given the particular exposure, very precise devices have been adopted to prevent the door components working loose, caused by the vibrations and stress caused by the frequency of the trains. In fact, like all the components in the rail noise barriers, the doors must be totally maintenance free for the first 10 years of life, except for lubricating the mobile parts like hinges and handles, and only steel profiles can guarantee this level of performance. An attempt was made with aluminium profiles, but the doors immediately deformed very dangerously and were consequently replaced with steel ones straight away.

The type tests focused on the following features:

- Sound insulation: must guarantee 30 decibels (UNI EN 1793);

- Bending stress tests for 2,000,000 cycles on the panel, including the door with a thrust of 2.5 KN/m2; checking the door opened correctly after the test;

- Twisting stress test for 2,000,000 cycles on the panel including the door, with twisting of 9mm/m;

- Tests on all the component materials: steel, nuts, bolts, seals, glass, treatments, etc.
