After a five year long renovation project, the Basilica was re-opened to the public last October. The aim of the project was to return Vicenza’s symbolic building to the town.

This is the symbolic building in Vicenza which dominates the entire southern side of Piazza dei Signori.
Together with other works by Andrea Palladio in the town centre and surroundings, the Basilica is a masterpiece of Vicenza architecture and included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List.
Palladio’s harmonious and perfect Basilica has been admired for centuries by visitors and scholars: Palladio’s main work, it is one of the most impressive and beautiful buildings in the Veneto. Now, after a five year long renovation project, the Basilica was re-opened to the public last October.
The aim of the project was to return Vicenza’s symbolic building to the town, ensuring it was perfectly functional for cultural, commercial and civil use. The renovation involved the white stone cladding on the Basilica, to give new brightness to the building, and the roof with the colours restored to their original splendour. Furthermore, external lighting and lifts have been installed, which means the disabled are also able to visit the loggia and terrace, and enjoy the beautiful view of the city and surrounding hills. The renovation work involved the entire historic complex: the enormous window frames are made from TABS® system steel profiles, which means the large windows in the hall now satisfy all requirements for strength, sound and heat insulation and design, resulting in a state of the art building with new lighting.
Apart from the renewal, restoration and cleaning, this complex project also enables using the building according to modern regulations and needs, including the plant engineering, beginning with the air conditioning, which was not there before, and the indoor and outdoor lighting, which have been studied following innovative criteria to enhance the building. A delicate “moonlight” has been used outside, which gives a fairy store atmosphere to this amazing Palladian building.
Lifts and new stairways mean that all the different parts of the building can now be used, including the elegant loggia surrounding Palazzo della Ragione, and the incredible terrace on top of the Palladian structure in line with the copper roof, which offers a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding hills.
So, after this lengthy renovation project, the symbolic monument of Vicenza has been restored to its antique splendour and returned shining and new to its public.
