For genuine safety
Recently there has been a lot of talk about safety in our country. All the TV networks, radio programmes, newspapers and magazines have held lengthy discussions about the feeling of unease – the famous “feeling of insecurity” – that the majority of Italians are experiencing. One of the main fears is the safety level in our homes: in fact, break-in is one of the most feared crimes by more than 50% of Italians.
All sorts of useful and often obvious advice is given out to prevent theft from our homes, to make them safer and prevent any unpleasant surprises: “make your doors safe, armoured doors are best”, “always lock the door when you go out”, or even “don’t leave the key under the doormat or in any other obvious place”, “don’t leave messages on the answering phone or the door that show you are out”, and so on.
We at Acciaio Arte Architettura want to add to the list with a solution which, mainly due to lack of information, is never given: not only installing armoured doors but also armoured windows with class 4 and 5 anti-break in strength, to prevent fitting unattractive bars on the parts of our houses that are easier for thieves to break into.
Armoured window frames are often made by fitting steel reinforcement onto aluminium, wood or PVC profiles plus special blocking and locking systems and special shatter proof glass. These various devices help to strengthen frames that have been wrongly made from materials which are naturally softer and not very resistant, in an attempt to satisfy the growing request from the market to make our homes safer.
However there is another solution that offers all the right features to protect us against burglars and break-in: steel frames. With respect to traditional materials, steel offers physical and mechanical properties with much higher performance and resistance, meaning we can choose the right solution for us and reach the highest levels of resistance to break-in, bullets, explosion and Kalashnikov fire. Steel is by nature already armoured and when compared with other products used to make the frames it even costs less. In fact there is really no competition between a material that is strong by nature and another that needs expensive crutches to hold it up against attack.
We must be careful however to ensure that the amazing performance offered by steel is not compromised but rather optimised, and it is important that the profiles used for the frames have very precise technical requisites with special focus on the quality of the alloys, the thickness of the plate (which must not be less than 2 mm), the surface treatment and the way the tubular profile is made (which must be welded and not just seamed). The installation of the frame is fundamental then to exploit all the qualities of the material and guarantee perfect resistance and hold with all the corners welded.
An armoured frame remains perfect and efficient forever, but it is not enough to fit a few steel components to make any sort of material strong or “armoured”. If we are looking for genuine safety in terms of resistance to break-in, long life strength and performance and the best return on our investment by preventing additional costs, steel is the only choice we can make.
